Download YouTube Video Transcript

Convert a YouTube video into a transcript.

Want to download a clean YouTube transcript? You can’t, at least not from YouTube directly. They’ll show you the transcript with the “Show Transcript” button, but they don’t let you copy it as a clean paragraph, they don’t fix the punctuation, and they don’t give you a download option.

The native view ends up looking like this:

An Example of a YouTube Transcript, Shown Alongside the YouTube Video

You probably don’t want timestamps every 2-3 seconds (along with a total lack of punctuation). Simply copying and pasting this transcript won’t help you much, as you’ll need to spend ages cleaning it up.

That’s what this tool fixes. It downloads your transcript as-is, or runs it through AI cleanup that adds punctuation, fixes obvious typos, and reformats it into readable paragraphs.

Let’s take a look at how it works.

How to Use the Free YouTube Video Transcript Generator

Our YouTube Transcript tool is fast and easy to use. Here’s how to get started with it in three simple steps:

Step 1. Paste the URL of Your Video Into the YouTube Transcript Generator

First, you need your YouTube video link (URL). Copy and paste this into the “YouTube Video URL” box.

Note: The YouTube transcript generator only works for YouTube videos. If you want to transcribe a video that isn’t on YouTube, use the Transcribe Audio or Video Tool instead.

Once you’ve entered the URL, you should see a preview of your video, showing the thumbnail image, the title, the name of your channel, and when it was posted.

Step 2. Choose Whether or Not to Include Timestamps

YouTube automatically includes timestamps in your transcript. Depending on how you’re going to use the transcript, you may or may not want timestamps. Just toggle this option on if you would like to include timestamps.

Step 3. Decide Whether You Want the Transcript Cleaned Up (Recommended)

The YouTube transcript generator can “clean up” your transcript, fixing formatting errors, typos, missing punctuation, and more.

Note: The generator will still give you an accurate transcript. The cleanup won’t alter anything you said in your video content. It’ll just add punctuation and make the transcript much easier to read. We’ll take a closer look at how this works in a moment.

Selecting to Clean Up the Transcript Using the YouTube Transcript Generator

Once you’re happy with the options you’ve selected, go ahead and click the “Grab Transcript” button to get your transcript.

After you get your transcript, you can copy it. You can also use RightBlogger chat to ask follow-up questions about the video. I like to use this to get a summary or ask something specific. You can also share it with a friend using a RightBlogger share URL.

Bonus: Use My free YouTube SEO Checklist Along With This Tool

Are you trying to get your videos to rank better on YouTube? Video SEO (search engine optimization) is important here. Your transcript is part of that, and it’s already on YouTube. You might want to quote from your cleaned-up transcript in your video description, however.

Here’s my personal checklist to help you boost your YouTube video’s SEO.

  1. Use the free Keyword Research Tool to find out what people are searching for in your niche (you can also try YouTube’s “search suggest” feature)
  2. Make sure you’re using a suitable keyword in your video’s title
  3. Include that keyword (and any related keywords) in your video description
  4. Look at the tags and hashtags used by popular videos in your niche. Would any of those make sense for your video too?
  5. Always add YouTube tags to your video. Get your most important ones in first, since the tags section is limited to 500 characters.
  6. Prompt your viewers to like, subscribe, and share your video: this helps signal to YouTube that your video is popular
  7. Create a properly-sized thumbnail (and title) that stand out and encourage clicks. YouTube takes your clickthrough rate into consideration when deciding on rankings.
  8. If you haven’t yet recorded your video, make sure you say your keyword at least once, so that it appears in your transcript

Digging Deeper into the Timestamp and Cleanup Options

If you’re not too sure whether to include timestamps or whether to clean up your transcript, let’s take a look at some examples of what the AI video transcriber can do, along with specific use cases for these.

No Timestamps, No Cleanup (Just Subtitles)

First, you can opt for a video with no timestamps and no cleanup. The AI will simply pull your transcript from YouTube, using all the same punctuation, spellings, and so on. This means you’ll receive a transcript without any commas or full stops, and there are likely to be some typos (e.g. “R blogger” for “RightBlogger”.

The YouTube Transcript Download Tool Giving the Transcript Without Any Cleanup (and No Timestamps)

Useful For: You could use this bare-bones transcript if you were determined to edit the transcript yourself, rather than having the AI clear it up. Otherwise, it’s not the best option!

Timestamps, No Cleanup

A transcript with no timestamps and no cleanup is tough to read. How about adding in timestamps, but not cleaning it up?

In this case, the RightBlogger AI gives you exactly the same transcript that you’ll see alongside a YouTube video, with timestamps every 2-3 seconds.

The YouTube Transcript Download Tool Giving the Transcript With Timestamps But Not Cleaning Up the Grammar and Punctuation

Useful For: This transcript could work if your audience will be reading along while watching the video. It makes it easy for them to keep their place because of the very frequent timestamps.

Timestamps, Cleanup

How about toggling on timestamps and cleanup? This gives you a transcript with the original timestamps, but with the text edited to correct typos and to include punctuation.

The YouTube Transcript Download Tool Giving the Transcript With Both Timestamps and Cleaned-Up Text (Punctuation Corrected Etc)

Useful For: This is generally a better option if people will be following along with the video, as the text is clearer and easier to read. You could also edit the text into paragraphs, including timestamps at key points, to help with comprehension and/or note-taking.

No Timestamps, Cleanup

The final option is to have no timestamps, but to clean up the transcript. The advanced AI will format your transcript into sentences and paragraphs, automatically fixing typos and making the whole thing a lot more user-friendly.

The YouTube Transcript Download Tool Giving the Transcript Without Timestamps But With the Text Cleaned Up for Easy Reading

Useful For: This is a great option if the text transcript is going to be read separately from the video. It’s easy to read and makes sense on its own. You could also run the transcript through a text or video summarizer (such as the Summarizer Tool) to produce an overview of your content.

What to Do With Your Transcript Next

Once you have your clean transcript, the real value is in repurposing it. A single 20-minute YouTube video can become a blog post, three tweets, a LinkedIn post, and a newsletter section without you writing any of it from scratch. Here are the natural next moves:

  • Turn the transcript into a full SEO-optimized blog post with the YouTube to Blog Post tool. The fastest way to get your video ranking in Google Search alongside YouTube. For a deeper breakdown of the workflow, see our guide on how creators are using AI in their YouTube process.
  • Pull tweet ideas from the transcript with YouTube to Tweets. Especially useful for podcast-style or interview videos where every couple of minutes has a quotable line.
  • Drop the transcript into RightBlogger Chat and ask for a summary, a tweet thread, an outline for a follow-up video, or a newsletter draft. Same source content, multiple formats.
  • If your video is competing for views in a saturated category, our guide on promoting YouTube content covers what to do once the transcript work is done and the video needs distribution.

The transcript download is step one. The repurposing is where the leverage compounds.

YouTube Video Transcript Generator FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Got questions about creating the transcript of a YouTube video with this tool, or about transcripts in general? Here’s what you need to know.

Can AI Do as Good a Job as a Transcriptionist?

AI may sometimes make mistakes that a skilled transcriptionist would avoid. But there’s always the possibility of human error, too!

The AI is far faster than any transcription service, getting your transcript back to you in seconds, not days. It’s also included on every RightBlogger plan (the entry Solo plan is $49/mo), and even on the most affordable plan you can create hundreds of transcripts for less than a single human-transcribed transcript would cost.

Does This Tool Generate Transcripts from Scratch?

The AI YouTube transcript tool uses YouTube’s own transcript/subtitles as a basis for the one it creates. This is why you can only use it with YouTube videos.

Using the existing YouTube transcript means you can get your transcript in seconds. You don’t have to wait for the AI to “watch” the video.

If you do need to generate a transcript from scratch, use the Transcribe Audio or Video tool instead, and upload your file. It’s still very fast!
